What Are Herbal Preparations?

Herbal preparations are the forms herbalists use to extract medicinal compounds from plants and deliver them to the body. The plant matters, but so does the method. A chamomile tea, a chamomile tincture, and a chamomile infused oil all come from the same flower and behave differently in practice.

Every preparation comes down to one question: what solvent are you using? Water, alcohol, vinegar, glycerin, honey, and oil each pull a different set of constituents out of a plant, and none of them pulls everything. Minerals and mucilage dissolve well in water. Alkaloids need alcohol. Resins extract into alcohol or oil. Fat soluble compounds require oil. Matching the solvent to the plant and to the person is most of the craft.

Infusions (Herbal Teas)

An infusion is made by pouring hot water over herbs and letting them steep. This is the oldest and simplest preparation, and it is what most people mean when they say herbal tea. Standard infusions steep 5 to 15 minutes. Medicinal strength infusions use more herb, around one ounce per quart of water, and steep 4 hours or longer with a lid on to trap volatile oils.

Infusions suit delicate plant parts: leaves, flowers, and soft aromatic herbs like chamomile, peppermint, nettle, and lemon balm. What they extract: minerals, mucilage, flavonoids, water soluble vitamins, and a portion of the volatile oils when the vessel stays covered. Shelf life: 48 hours refrigerated. Decoctions

A decoction is made by simmering herbs in water, usually 20 to 45 minutes with the lid on. The sustained heat breaks down tough cell walls that steeping cannot penetrate.

Use decoctions for hard, dense plant parts: roots, barks, seeds, and dried berries. Ginger root, cinnamon bark, dandelion root, astragalus, and rosehips all belong in a simmering pot rather than a teacup. Traditional Chinese Medicine relies on decoction as its primary preparation method, often simmering complex formulas down to a concentrated dose. What they extract: minerals, polysaccharides, tannins, and bitter compounds, though the long heat drives off most volatile oils. Shelf life: 48 hours refrigerated.

The rule of thumb: soft parts get infused, hard parts get decocted. When a blend contains both, decoct the hard material first, remove it from the heat, then add the delicate herbs to steep in the hot liquid.

Tinctures

A tincture is a concentrated liquid extract made by soaking herbs in alcohol, typically for 4 to 6 weeks, then straining. Alcohol reaches compounds water cannot, and it preserves them. Dried herbs lose potency as they age on the shelf, while a properly made and stored tincture can extend the medicine's life indefinitely.

The folk method fills a jar about halfway with dried herb, covers it with 80 to 100 proof vodka, and shakes it daily until straining. Professional herbalists use weight to volume ratios, commonly 1:5 for dried herb and 1:2 for fresh, with the alcohol proof matched to the plant.

Matching proof to plant material:

  • 80 to 100 proof (40 to 50% alcohol): the general workhorse range for dried leaves, flowers, and most dried roots. The water fraction pulls the water soluble constituents while the alcohol handles the rest.
  • 100 to 140 proof (50 to 70% alcohol): aromatic roots, barks, seeds, and berries where volatile oils carry much of the medicine, such as ginger, angelica, and fennel.
  • 150 to 190 proof (75 to 95% alcohol): fresh juicy plants, whose own water content would otherwise dilute the menstruum, plus resins and gums like myrrh and pine, which need high alcohol to dissolve.

What they extract: alkaloids, resins, volatile oils, glycosides, and most aromatic constituents. What alcohol leaves behind matters just as much: minerals, mucilage, and most polysaccharides stay in the marc.

Not every herb earns a tincture. Ashwagandha is the clearest example: its medicinal activity is not limited to the withanolides that alcohol extracts well. The acylsteryl glucoside saponins (sitoindosides VII through X) are bound to sugars, which makes them poorly soluble in a standard alcohol menstruum, and they appear to be important to the root's medicinal properties. This is why Ayurveda has always used the whole root powder, and it matches what I see in clinical practice, where the powder outperforms the tincture. I have observed the same pattern with ginseng, though I have not seen it documented elsewhere. For herbs like these, or any time you are unsure whether the medicinal constituents survive extraction, whole herb powder is the failsafe. You get everything the plant contains. Source it organic, minimally processed, and as fresh as possible, since powders lose potency fastest of all.

Shelf life: stored cool and dark, tinctures keep for many years and often indefinitely. Doses are drops or droppersful, taken directly or in a splash of water, which makes tinctures the workhorse of Western herbal practice. Glycerites

A glycerite swaps alcohol for vegetable glycerin, a sweet, syrupy solvent. The process mirrors tincture making: soak the herb in glycerin (often cut with a little water for dried material), wait several weeks, strain.

Glycerin is a weaker solvent than alcohol, so expect lower potency. The reason to choose a glycerite is the person, not the plant. It is the standard option for anyone avoiding alcohol: during pregnancy, in recovery from addiction, with impaired liver function, for religious reasons, or by preference. The sweet taste also makes glycerites the easiest sell for children and animals. What they extract: mostly water soluble constituents plus some tannins and aromatics, at lower concentration than alcohol achieves. Shelf life: 1 to 2 years.

Herbal Vinegars and Oxymels

An herbal vinegar is made by steeping herbs in raw apple cider vinegar for 2 to 4 weeks. An oxymel combines that vinegar extraction with honey, traditionally in roughly equal parts. The name comes from the Greek for acid and honey, and fire cider is the most famous modern example.

Realistically, these are weak medicine. Vinegar is a poor solvent for most medicinal constituents, so I treat vinegars and oxymels as culinary preparations first: a pleasant way to fold herbs into daily food and drink rather than a substitute for a tincture or decoction. What they extract: minerals from nutritive herbs like nettle and dandelion, plus some flavor and aromatic compounds. Use them on salads, in dressings, or by the spoonful in warm water. Shelf life: 6 months to a year refrigerated.

Syrups and Electuaries

An herbal syrup starts as a strong decoction that gets reduced, then combined with honey or sugar, usually one part sweetener to one part liquid. Sugar is a preservative. That high sugar concentration is what keeps a syrup stable, and it makes the medicine taste good enough that children ask for it, which matters when you need consistent dosing through an illness. An electuary is simpler: powdered herbs stirred directly into honey until they form a paste. Nothing is strained out, so you consume the whole herb, which sidesteps the extraction problem entirely. Electuaries suit warming spices and tonic powders like ginger, cinnamon, and ashwagandha. What they deliver: a syrup carries the water soluble constituents of its base decoction, while an electuary delivers the complete plant. Shelf life: several months refrigerated for syrups; honey electuaries keep 6 months or longer in a cool cupboard.

Infused Oils

An infused oil is made by steeping plant material in a carrier oil such as olive, jojoba, or melted tallow, either slowly over 4 to 6 weeks in a sunny window or gently over low heat for several hours. The oil becomes the base for salves, balms, and body care. Calendula, plantain, and arnica are classic choices. What they extract: fat soluble compounds including carotenoids, essential oils, and resins, which is why sticky material like cottonwood buds and pine infuses so well into oil.

Safety warning: never infuse garlic or fresh, moist herbs in oil and store the result at room temperature. Low acid plant material in an oxygen free oil environment is exactly where botulism spores grow, and contaminated garlic in oil has caused documented outbreaks. Use thoroughly dried herbs for shelf stable oils. Any fresh garlic or fresh herb oil must be refrigerated and used within a few days.

Shelf life: about a year for dry-herb oils, longer with stable carriers like jojoba, and days in the refrigerator for anything made with fresh material.

Salves and Balms

A salve is an infused oil thickened with beeswax into a semi-solid topical, typically one part wax to four or five parts oil by weight. Melt, combine, pour into tins, and it sets within the hour. Balms follow the same process with a firmer wax ratio or richer fats like tallow and shea.

Salves stay where you put them, which makes them the preparation of choice for dry skin, minor scrapes, sore muscles, and cracked hands. What they deliver: the same fat soluble constituents as their base oil, held against the skin. Shelf life: a year or more kept cool and dry. Poultices, Compresses, and Liniments

These three deliver herbs through the skin without an oil base.

A poultice is plant material mashed or moistened into a paste and applied directly to the skin, often wrapped in cloth. Fresh plants work, and so does dried cut and sifted herb rehydrated with a little water, or spit in a pinch out in the field. Plantain on a bee sting is the classic example. Poultices are made fresh and used immediately.

A compress soaks a cloth in a strong infusion or decoction, which is then applied warm or cool to the affected area. It delivers the same water soluble constituents as the tea it is made from, with temperature as part of the therapy. Make it fresh from tea that is no more than 48 hours old.

A liniment is a tincture formulated for external use, and most are made with the same drinkable spirits as internal tinctures. Witch hazel or isopropyl alcohol can substitute as the base, in which case the bottle must be clearly labeled external only. Liniments absorb fast and suit sore muscles and joints, and like tinctures they keep for years.

Choosing the Right Preparation

Start with the plant. Aromatic and delicate material wants a quick infusion or an alcohol extraction. Dense roots and barks want long simmering or long maceration. Resinous plants give little to water and need alcohol or oil. Herbs whose medicine does not survive extraction, like ashwagandha, want the whole powder.

Then consider the person and the purpose. Daily mineral nourishment favors infusions. Acute dosing on the go favors tinctures. Anyone avoiding alcohol favors glycerites, syrups, and electuaries, as do children. Skin conditions call for oils, salves, poultices, or compresses. Shelf life matters too: water preparations last days, syrups and glycerites last months to a couple of years, and tinctures last indefinitely.
