Endocrine Disruptors: Where They Hide and How to Cut Exposure

Most hormone-disrupting chemicals reach the body through ordinary routes: food packaging, receipts, nonstick pans, fragrance, sunscreen, and house dust. This article covers the compounds with the best-documented endocrine activity, where each one shows up, and the changes I have made at home to lower my own exposure. I have kept the focus on exposure rather than disease outcomes, because that is where the published evidence is clearest and where daily decisions have the most effect.

What endocrine disruptors are

Evidence: strong. The mechanism is established in laboratory and animal studies, and human biomonitoring confirms widespread exposure.

An endocrine disruptor is a chemical that interferes with hormone signaling. Some bind directly to estrogen, androgen, or thyroid receptors and switch them on or off. Others change how hormones are made, transported, or cleared. Hormone-sensitive tissue responds to very small amounts of hormone, so a chemical that mimics one can produce effects at concentrations far lower than the doses used in conventional toxicity testing.

A 2012 review in Endocrine Reviews by Vandenberg and colleagues documented this low-dose pattern across dozens of compounds and found that the response often does not rise in a straight line with the dose. A small exposure can produce a larger effect than a moderate one. Everyday product exposures fall in that low, repeated range.

Common endocrine disruptors and where they show up

Evidence: strong for hormone activity in laboratory and animal studies. Human outcome data are strongest for phthalates, BPA, and PFAS.

Bisphenol A (BPA)

BPA is used in polycarbonate plastic, the lining of many food cans, and thermal receipt paper. Its estrogenic activity was first reported in 1993, when Stanford researchers found that BPA leaching from autoclaved polycarbonate flasks stimulated estrogen-responsive cells. A 2010 Swiss study measured BPA transferring from receipt paper to fingertips, with more transfer when the skin was damp or greasy. Products labeled BPA-free often substitute bisphenol S or bisphenol F, and a 2015 systematic review found both show receptor activity comparable to BPA in laboratory testing.

Phthalates

Phthalates soften vinyl plastic and carry scent in personal care products. They act mainly against testosterone. A 2005 study led by Shanna Swan found that boys whose mothers had higher phthalate metabolites during pregnancy had shorter anogenital distance, a marker of reduced androgen action before birth. Because the word "fragrance" on a label can cover undisclosed phthalates, fragrance-free products are the most reliable way to avoid them.

PFAS (forever chemicals)

PFAS are fluorinated compounds used for nonstick cookware, stain resistance, water repellency, and grease-proof food wrappers. They stay in the body for years. In a 2010 analysis of U.S. biomonitoring data, adults with the highest blood levels of PFOA had higher rates of diagnosed thyroid disease. A 2022 study from the University of Toronto and the University of Notre Dame detected PFAS in most stain-resistant children's school uniforms tested. Athletic wear sold as sweat-wicking or water-resistant carries the same risk. Drinking water is a major route in many regions, and I cover the filters that remove PFAS in my water filter guide.

Parabens

Parabens preserve cosmetics, lotions, and some foods. Routledge and colleagues showed in 1998 that several parabens activate the estrogen receptor, with activity rising as the molecule's carbon chain gets longer. A 2004 study by Philippa Darbre measured intact parabens in human breast tissue samples, which shows the compounds are absorbed through skin and stored rather than fully cleared. Presence in tissue does not establish cause, and I include it only to show that skin application is a real route of uptake. Look for methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben on labels.

Triclosan

Triclosan is an antibacterial agent still found in some toothpastes, hand soaps, and treated textiles. Short-term exposure lowered circulating thyroxine in rats in a 2007 study. Anything labeled "antibacterial" deserves a look at the ingredient list.

PBDE flame retardants

PBDEs were added to furniture foam, electronics, and carpet padding for decades. Their structure resembles thyroid hormone, and developmental exposure lowered thyroxine in rat pups in a 2001 study. Older furniture and household dust are the main reservoirs, which makes dust control the practical lever.

Atrazine

Atrazine is one of the most heavily used herbicides on U.S. corn. Tyrone Hayes at Berkeley reported in 2002 that male frogs exposed to 0.1 parts per billion, a level found in rainwater, developed female reproductive tissue. It contaminates groundwater in agricultural regions and is another reason to filter drinking water.

Legacy pollutants: PCBs, dioxins, and DDT

These are banned or restricted but persist in soil, sediment, and animal fat. Exposure today comes mainly through fatty fish, dairy, and meat from contaminated areas, since these compounds concentrate as they move up the food chain. Buying animal foods from producers you can ask questions of is the practical response.

Phytoestrogens

Soy isoflavones and flax lignans bind estrogen receptors, with a preference for the beta receptor. They are dietary, short-lived in the body, and not stored in fat the way synthetic compounds are. I list them for completeness, not as a reason to avoid whole foods.

UV filters in sunscreen

Evidence: strong for skin absorption and for estrogenic activity in laboratory studies. Human health outcome data are limited.

Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV light with organic filters. Several of these filters pass through the skin into the blood, and several show hormone activity in laboratory testing. Mineral filters, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, sit on the skin surface and do not carry these findings.

Oxybenzone (benzophenone-3)

A 2019 randomized trial published in JAMA applied commercial sunscreens under maximal use conditions and found oxybenzone in plasma at concentrations more than 400 times the 0.5 nanogram per milliliter level that triggers further safety testing. Levels remained above that threshold at the final blood draw a week later. In 2001, Schlumpf and colleagues at the University of Zurich showed that oxybenzone and four other common filters stimulated growth in estrogen-responsive cells, and that oxybenzone increased uterine weight in immature rats.

Octinoxate and homosalate

Both were among the filters in the Zurich study that stimulated estrogen-responsive cells, and octinoxate increased uterine weight in the rat test. In the 2020 follow-up JAMA trial, every chemical filter tested, including homosalate and octinoxate, exceeded the 0.5 nanogram threshold in blood after a single day of application.

Octocrylene

Octocrylene slowly degrades into benzophenone. A 2021 study tested commercial sunscreens and found benzophenone rising as the products aged, so an older bottle contains more than a new one. Benzophenone is itself endocrine-active, which is one reason to discard sunscreen past its date rather than finish it.

Avobenzone

Avobenzone did not show estrogenic activity in the Zurich study. Its problem is instability. It breaks down in sunlight within hours unless stabilized, and the breakdown products are reactive. Most formulas pair it with octocrylene as the stabilizer, which brings the issue above back into the bottle.

Retinyl palmitate

This vitamin A ester is added to some sunscreens and daily moisturizers as an antioxidant. The U.S. National Toxicology Program's photocarcinogenesis study in hairless mice found that retinyl palmitate applied to skin and then exposed to UV accelerated skin tumor development compared with UV alone. It has no place in a product made for sun exposure.

What I use instead

Zinc oxide as the only active ingredient, in a base I can read. I keep a list of brands that pass my label check, plus a homemade zinc balm, in my mineral sunscreen article. Sun avoidance also carries a trade-off worth knowing about. In a Swedish cohort of 29,518 women followed for 20 years, those who avoided the sun had about twice the all-cause mortality of the highest exposure group. That is an observational finding about a population, not a prescription for any individual, and I mention it because the advice to avoid the sun entirely is rarely presented with its own cost attached.

Food additives

Evidence: moderate. One randomized trial in children; the rest is formulation and labeling evidence.

Synthetic dyes, preservatives, and processing aids are additives rather than hormone disruptors in the strict sense, but they arrive through the same daily channels. The clearest human trial is the 2007 Southampton study in The Lancet, which gave three-year-olds and eight-to-nine-year-olds a drink containing a mix of artificial colors and sodium benzoate and measured increased hyperactivity compared with placebo.

Formulations also differ between countries. The same brand can carry synthetic dyes in the United States and plant-based colors in the European Union, because EU rules require a warning label on products containing the Southampton colors. Read the U.S. label and assume nothing from the brand name. The ingredient lists on products that have existed for decades have changed repeatedly, so childhood memory is not a guide to what is in the box today.

Cured deli meats add sodium nitrite, which forms nitrosamines under high heat and acidic conditions. I buy uncured meat or cook fresh, and I treat the phrase "no nitrates added" with caution, since celery powder is a concentrated nitrate source that the label is allowed to describe as natural.

How I reduce exposure at home

Evidence: strong for the exposure routes. How much each change lowers your own levels depends on your starting point.

  • Store and reheat food in glass or stainless steel. Heat and fat both increase leaching from plastic, and the original 1993 BPA finding came from heated polycarbonate.
  • Decline paper receipts, or handle them with dry hands and wash afterward. Hand sanitizer before touching a receipt increases absorption.
  • Replace nonstick pans with cast iron, carbon steel, or stainless. Scratched nonstick coatings shed the most.
  • Choose fragrance-free personal care, or products that list every scent component by name. My essential oil article covers why "natural fragrance" is not a safe assumption either.
  • Read labels for parabens and triclosan. Anything marketed as antibacterial gets a second look.
  • Filter drinking water. In a 2020 Duke and North Carolina State test of home filters, reverse osmosis units removed about 94 percent of PFAS, while carbon pitcher filters were inconsistent. Details are in the water filter guide.
  • Control dust. Damp dusting and a HEPA vacuum matter most in homes with older foam furniture or carpet padding.
  • Skip stain-resistant and water-repellent finishes on clothing, school uniforms, upholstery, and carpet.
  • Wash with soap whose ingredient list you can finish reading. I make my own from tallow and castor oil, and the full method is in my cold process tallow soap recipe. Finished bars and tallow body care are in the shop.
  • Buy canned food in glass where possible, or cook from dried. Where a can is unavoidable, look for a brand that names its liner material.
  • Use zinc oxide as the only sunscreen active, and throw out chemical sunscreen that has aged.

Are BPA-free plastics safe?

Not by default. BPA-free usually means the manufacturer substituted bisphenol S or bisphenol F, and a 2015 systematic review found both act on hormone receptors in laboratory testing at potencies similar to BPA. Glass and stainless steel avoid the question entirely.

Does "natural fragrance" mean phthalate-free?

No. Fragrance formulas are trade secrets in the United States, and the word "natural" on a label has no regulatory definition for scent. Phthalates can be used as carriers in natural fragrance blends. The only reliable label is a full ingredient list or "fragrance-free."

Can the body clear PFAS?

Slowly. Blood half-lives for the common PFAS run from two to eight years depending on the compound. A 2022 randomized trial in JAMA Network Open found that Australian firefighters who gave blood or plasma every six to twelve weeks for a year had measurably lower PFOS and PFHxS levels than those who did not. Reducing intake is the main lever for most people, since exposure continues while clearance is slow.

Is mineral sunscreen absorbed too?

Zinc oxide sits on the skin surface as particles. Small amounts of zinc have been measured in blood after heavy use, but zinc is a dietary mineral with normal excretion routes, and zinc oxide has shown no estrogenic activity in the receptor tests that flagged the chemical filters.
